Sir,

Government House,

Hongkong, 18th March, 1904.

394!

With reference to Mr. Chamberlain's Despatch No.413 of 13th December, 1901, I have the honour to inform you that in accordance with the option allowed in the fourth paragraph thereof, Mr. Drayson has intimated his desire to relinquish his appointment under this Government and to return to the Colonial Office as soon as possible after the 22nd February next, when he will have completed three years' service in this Colony.

2. The work done by Mr. Drayson in the reorganisation of the clerical and registration departments of the Colonial Secretary's Office has fully justified his selection by Mr. Chamberlain and I regret extremely that he has decided to leave the service of this Government.

3. With regard to the selection of his successor, I am not in a position to recommend the appointment of any clerk now in the service. I have therefore to request you to be so good as to take the necessary steps for the selection in due course of a suitable candidate in England. As it is desirable that the Officer selected should be prepared to remain in the Colony for some years I would suggest

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

ALFRED LYTTELTON, K.C., M.P.,
